A couple of weeks ago one candidate for a job I had posted on the newspaper sent me his resume. No big deal, until I saw all his past jobs were related with adult sites. This amazed me. I supposed, like most people, adult content makes money, but really, I didn’t realize how much. So, with that in mind, I tried to do a study to be able to “guess” a little better about this business.
My approach was to determine the traffic amount adult sites gets and some sources of income that web sites can get.
Web queries
All people now search engines is the first source of traffic. Well, we can compare the amount of queries using some services and so, determine better the amount of traffic a site has.
Google offers his “trends” service which compares the queries about two or more keywords. I used it to compare two big keywords: sex and google. Believe or not, the term “google” is one of the most searched ones by several special publications. That’s the graph I got:
Another service I used was the one provided by the company WordTracker, one of the best ones in the search engine optimization industry (for people who doesn’t know, SEO or search engine optimization is an industry who has optimizations services to get the top of searches people like you and me make on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft Live Search). They had a record of bringing the most searched keywords of all mayor search engines every week, using the latest 48 hours data and the last 100 days data. I used the second one, and what I got is that:
- sex
- youporn
- porn
- myspace
- redtube
- ebay
- yahoo
- youtube
- pussy
This is the first 10 items of the list, and as you can see, five of them are about a sexual topic. Moreover, the first three ones are about that.
Traffic estimation services
I used both free best ones, Compete and Alexa. I could realize that www.youporn.com and www.redtube.com are the two more visited adult sites on the net, so I calculated the data for those. What I got is that:
Youporn.com: Ranks 31 in Alexa, getting 1.95 % of all internet traffic. In Compete, an estimative of 16,465,221 visits and 418,216,643 page views each month.
Redtube.com: Ranks 46 in Alexa, getting 1.558 % of all internet traffic. In Compete, an estimative of 11,356,278 visits and 195,327,982 page views each month.
How they get money?
One key number I use all times to estimate revenue from traffic is the one dollar per 1000 page views formula, the low target of every page who uses Google Adsense program as revenue source only. Using this rule and Compete data, youporn.com makes 400,000+ dollars and redtube.com near 200,000 dollars each month. Please keep in mind Adsense doesn’t allow adult sites in his program, but anyway this rule is useful as an estimative.
On both sites, really is about referral programs (the so called affiliate programs). For redtube.com, I found three different programs running. They pay from 30 to 130 bucks per new paid member and one have the option to send to you 60% of all the revenue they make for your referred subscribers, for life.
On the other hand, Youporn.com has five programs running, one masked as a “plus service”. This one is a sign up bait to www.videobox.com, which has a referral program giving 50% of their revenue from your subscribers. The other four programs offer similar things like redtube.com ones, from 50 to 130 bucks per subscriber.
So, there is a very good chance to get money from porn, if you can get blessed by Google or any other good search engine. But before start making something on the web, please consider the saturation in this industry. As you and me, there are lots of people with well developed adult sites. Maybe something more lateral, like a adult blog site or something more different, maybe a B2B for adult sites. Expect more analysis.
